🚀 MIT ran a four-week experiment to test whether AI can accelerate physical engineering, not just software. Thirty-one undergraduates across seven teams were given machine shops, industry-standard design software, and essentially unlimited access to frontier AI models through MIT's Parley platform. The task was to design, build, and test a single-spool jet engine producing 50 to 100 pounds of thrust on Jet-A fuel. The models excelled at summarizing textbooks, teaching unfamiliar CAD tools, and comparing design architectures. They faltered on physical judgment, hallucinating and missing tolerance issues. One team's rotor seized against its housing mid-test. The winning team was the most AI-skeptical, and the deepest in fundamentals. Faculty concluded that manufacturing, not design, remained the rate-limiting step, and that engineering experience is a multiplier on AI, not a substitute.
