@drtoddphillips: I preached Adam and Eve, the Fall, original sin, and humanity’s need for Jesus for more than 20 years. But once I stopped assuming the doctrine had to be true and simply looked at the story itself, I started hearing it very differently. Adam and Eve don’t yet possess the knowledge of good and evil. They eat from the very tree that gives them that knowledge after the serpent deceives Eve while Adam is there. And Christianity eventually builds an enormous theological structure on that story: original sin, humanity’s brokenness, death, separation from God, and ultimately the need for Jesus. I understood how that theology worked from inside Christianity. What I eventually couldn’t understand was how the story itself worked as justice. #AdamAndEve #OriginalSin #Christianity #Deconstruction #ChristianDeconstruction

The part that pisses me off is the story of women being created from the rib of a man. Like a woman is lesser. And we know women give birth. The idea that anyone believes this is nuts

Serpent means disguise. It was not a snake. It was a deity.

I knew I was done when I decided to read the bible for the 3rd time but this time I was going to write down every single question I had. I didn’t get through genesis before I filled entire notebook 😬

Also if sin/evil entered into the world when they ate the apple how did the snake / Lucifer/ whatever entice them to eat it in the first place? How did he get into the garden? And if that’s just a metaphor and they ate it on their own isn’t disobedience still a sin? So they were able to sin before sin was a thing?? Another issue i have is that if it was a snake/lucifer or whatever who told them to eat it, god knew he would and still created him anyway

In this story, god PUT THE TREE and the snake in there, telling 2 people who did NOT have knowledge of good and evil not to eat so they didn’t have the ability to logic yes or no, and then he punished them… he’s abusive.

I was always taught the story of Adam & Eve was a fictional fable to teach a moral lesson or truth.

Also why did he put the tree there if he knew that they were going to fail the test

Good point … if he hadn’t given them the knowledge of good and evil how were they supposed to suspect the serpent was evil?

Exactly. The crazy part is God is the one that lies to Adam n Eve in the garden and the serpent actually tells them the truth. Somehow Christians never realize or notice this. It’s Wilde

Thousands of years before the bible was written, Sumerian mythology taught that the serpent in the tree in the garden was the keeper of wisdom - a sacred regenerative force of life.

i think this raises a really important question about what we mean by divine justice. if adam and eve lacked the knowledge of good and evil, how fully could they have understood the moral consequences of disobeying god? and even if we accept that their actions introduced suffering and death into the human condition, why should generations of people inherit guilt for a choice they never made? what’s interesting is that inherited guilt isn’t even universally accepted within christianity. eastern christian traditions have historically emphasized humanity inheriting mortality and corruption rather than personal responsibility for adam’s sin. i think there’s a meaningful difference between understanding genesis as a story about humanity’s alienation from god and interpreting it as justification for condemning people for something they never personally chose. if god is perfectly just and loving, shouldn’t our understanding of the fall reflect that?
