I haven seen a few people popping up more incline to stock pick. The more research I have seen the more it shows how few people do beat the market. I much prefer buying funds and going about my life.

Professional fund managers with quarterly targets and customers pulling funds you mean? They're at a colossal disadvantage to buy and hold private investors. Fund manager stats are net of fees also. So the stats don't compare professional performance Vs an ETF, they look at stock pickers after their 2 and 20 fees or whatever are taken out. Then you get to a lot of retail investors who time things badly, FOMO, chase, panic sell or invest with money they need at short notice. It requires some work, yes, but it's far from impossible. Remember MSFT has returned 25% CAGR for 40 years.
