What happens during onboarding can be make or break! As a CEO, I have received a lot of feedback about onboarding, and I’m proud to say that I’ve heard from many people that Clockwork's the best process they’ve been through in starting in a new company. A lot of that is in large part due to the leadership team here who is always thinking about ways to improve that process because it can be so overwhelming. So, how do we do it? Here are 3 things I think are important to our onboarding process: 1️⃣🗓 We schedule everybody out for the first two weeks. So they have one-on-ones with the leadership team, they’re assigned a buddy who they’ll then work with who will show them the ropes. They have a series of conversations, protocols and policies to read, and they have a person that’s advocating for them and helping them navigate their way in this unfamiliar place. 2️⃣🧠 We are in the habit of hiring really smart people. When that happens, you have a lot of people who are used to being the smartest person in the room. I think just realizing that you’re not the only one anymore and settling into the rhythm of a group of people, a team of people, that operate from that place, is a challenge. But I think we work really hard to really wrap our arms around new people and welcome them in. 3️⃣🤝 We have a real commitment to equity and psychological safety, and so we really try to read a person, understand their cues, and ask them directly what they need from us to be most effective in their jobs. Then we have some social activities in those first couple of weeks. #careeradvice #workculture #teambuilding #newemployee #newjob #nancylyons
