we had to make a rule in our house that we aren't allowed to say "I'm sorry," because my wife would say it just to end the conversation. she didn't really mean it. she wasn't actually willing to be curious, empathize, and make a plan to change.
spoiler alert: we removed her ability to say the words I'm sorry to get out of the conversation, but she never actually learned how to repair. we're getting a divorce.

I don't want an apology to match the intensity of the pain, I just want it to demonstrate genuine understanding

This is so true. My gf/kind of ex cannot handle the shame so she will not apologize and change her behavior. I can’t wait to move out

On the other hand, my husband takes things wrong, chastised me for it, then demands an apology (and wants no repair) because to him and apology means "i was wrong and you are right." And so he never apologizes to me and refuses to apologize to our toddler because how could he be wrong over a toddler? 🙄

what if it's something that no matter how much someone is trying they are not able to change, it happens and at this point they don't know what to do to change so they are not able to say what they will do to make things better so they can't say shiy

Oof I love this description and it really encapsulates why good apologies are so difficult for avoidants 😬😅

I barely got a squeak of an "I know" when I said "you really hurt me" I don't think I ever got a real apology, I told him and myself that I forgave him, I just wanted to move past it and everything to be okay again, But truly, I don't think I ever forgave him

In my experience with a specific avoidant, they aren’t even able to acknowledge wrongdoing, the conversation is always about my response “I’m sorry you feel that way” etc.

i’m not going to atone for getting baited for years and years and having my mental health destroyed and being told hateful shit homie. i’m gonna explain the behavior and see if they stop saying nasty things and yelling and if they don’t i’m eventually just gonna leave

It's not that the intensity of the apology needs to match the hurt. The apology needs to be genuine, not a performative statement. It represents empathy for experience the other person endured.
