@meaningandwellness: This is an ongoing battle. I fluctuate between feeling awful about just giving it away to a random place and then getting frustrated that I keep moving things out and back into the closet. #hoarder #hoarding #hoardingdisorder #decluttering #declutter
look up your local church rummage sale. most people who shop church rummage sales do need and appreciate the stuff more. and if it doesn't sale it goes to a donation center usually not a goodwill but another local charity donation center.

Decluttering became really simple for me when I decided the right place for the stuff was the dump.

Your time and energy will vary. Stay flexible in your commitment and bit by bit meet your goal.

I care because I came from an environmental perspective- I just can’t bring myself throwing away broken electrics knowing they’re harmful to the environment and seeing how the trash trucks work. If they’re paper stuff sure just throw them away.

at times I have dumped everything in the trash I dont drive and I use to use the buy nothing group to rid of stuff but the people wouldn't show up or take forever to show up or they didn't drive and wanted me to deliver atp it becomes a hassle

Curb alert on the buy nothing group with picture of everything. What doesn’t get picked up by garbage day goes in the trash.

I know it feels like a waste of time, but giving it to buy nothing groups is so much better than donating it to stores selling it too high for those in need to afford. You are helping your community immensely by utilizing buy nothing groups ❤️

I have doom piles too and i go thru it and weed out and then put it back. then its a forever cycle of doing this. I need much less stuff and I cant seem to get rid of the stuff because its almost new and someone could use it so it goes in a bag and out to the shed of doom. where it lives till I either drop it at a take or leave pile or I throw it in the hopper. im trying very hard to break this cycle.

I think It does matter, we need to have that intentionality when we buy things and when we get rid of them. Just dropping it all off at donation is just making it someone else's problem, still better than throwing it in the trash but idk that is just how I think about it. I just try to be way more intentional to what comes into my house and what the lifespan of that item will look like.

Anything that keeps usable items out of the landfill is OK by me. I have a thrift store in my city that is 100% volunteer run and the proceeds go to the local homeless shelter. I donate most of my stuff there but, I also joined my local Buy Nothing group and I love giving items away to my neighbors on that platform.

unless it’s a crisis situation, i think disposing of clutter thoughtfully helps reinforce the “not collecting” half of the equation bc you’re actually experiencing this hidden cost (in time and energy).

Do you live somewhere where you can leave it at your curb with a “Free” sign on it? Easy to do and people who need it can take what they want whenever. If not much traffic in your area, you can post one picture of the pile and post to FB marketplace as “curb alert”. That way, you don’t have to worry about meet ups or people not showing up and people who need it will still get it at no cost to them.

It doesn’t even ultimately matter if you throw it away, especially clothing. An enormous percentage of what we donate to charity ends up in a landfill. Best decision I’ve made is to stop picking through things and just get rid of them. Storage bin of camping stuff I haven’t used in 5 years? Straight to the donation center without looking inside. Most of the clothes in my closet? Straight out the door without looking through them—I only wear about 7 items anyway and I still have much more than that. I’ve never regretted this new, liberating method of ridding my life of clutter!

I have just been putting it in a box and directly into the car. It might ride around town for a few days. But it’s out of my house.

Trust that it is going to a good place when you donate it. Not only am I a declutter coach, but I have literally furnished my home with things that people have donated to thrift stores. I never knew those people but my house looks awesome because of them!
