This animation tracks the migration flow of people leaving Africa, the Middle East, Asia, Mexico, and South America to settle in Europe, North America, Australia, and New Zealand, year after year, from 1950 to the present day. Each flag indicates the person's country of origin. In the 1950s, the map is almost empty. The first waves of migration are Algerians moving to France, Mexicans moving to the United States, and Indians and Pakistanis moving to Great Britain. In 1961, West Germany signs a guest worker agreement with Turkey, and Turkish workers flock to Germany throughout the 1960s and 1970s. In 1965, the United States opens its immigration system, and from then on, flags from Asia start heading toward America. Filipinos, Koreans, Chinese, and Indians settle in California, New York, Texas, and elsewhere. After the end of the Vietnam War in 1975, a large wave of Vietnamese refugees arrives in the United States, Australia, Canada, and France. Starting in the 1970s, migration from Mexico to the United States becomes the largest migratory flow, peaking between 1990 and 2007. Around 2000, Spain becomes a primary destination for Moroccans, Ecuadorians, Colombians, and Bolivians, while Indian and Chinese migration to the United States, Canada, and Australia continues to grow every year. The largest peak from the Middle East occurs between 2014 and 2017, when the Syrian civil war drives hundreds of thousands of people toward Germany and Sweden. After 2015, Venezuelans head to the United States and Spain, and in 2021, thousands of Hong Kong residents begin moving to Great Britain. By 2026, the United States shows the largest concentration of flags, followed by Germany, the United Kingdom, France, Spain, Canada, and Australia. Movements within each region of origin and between regions of origin are not shown.
