This line of thinking is inherently rooted in racism. You cannot call a group illiterate because you don’t believe their way of speaking is “proper”. Linguistics isn’t some rigid set of rules; it just could never work like that.

I’ve been saying this, they’re literally holding us back thinking that AAVE is proper.

I get what you mean but this only applies when typing for example: "Yhu" and "uu".When people talk it's most likely an accent/dialect and they can't change that💔like imagine if you told a Jamaican dude to speak "normal" like thats not his culture and way of speaking

isnt that the point of code switching though ? i dont really see people advocating for aave in a formal context

Yea I use it on the regular with my family, sometimes with certain friends who may not understand slang but when I’m outside I’m still using it but if I’m around a crowd of certain people I’ll turn it off so basically I code switch, there’s just a time and place you turn that filter off .

If you cant do both you WONT make it out here anyway. There are people that can speak multiple languages, if you cant switch from formal to informal then thats a literacy issue in itself.

This is an idiotic take ngl. “Slang” in th context you’re using it is AAVE, in which you’re grouping the two together for some reason. Dialects and slangs are not the same. One is linguistic that follows laws of its own. And the fact that you’re attacking JUST aave tells me exactly what i need to know since southern accents, which includes a dialect, is also a deviant from “standard english.” Like i could deadass go on abt ts

slang is the natural evolution of language. Pretending English, or any dialect for that matter, has hard and fast rules is silly. Speech grows and evolves to fit our needs as humans. Grammar and speech etiquette policing is stupid unless you legit cannot understand what they're saying. I recommend "The Decline of Dialect and the Death of Prose in Poetry" by Stygian Sagas. Covers this topic very well
