His army included soldiers from Moscow and several other principalities. Before the battle, Dmitry visited the Trinity Monastery and received the blessing of Sergius of Radonezh, an important spiritual leader. According to tradition, the battle began with a duel between the Russian warrior Alexander Peresvet and the Horde's champion, Chelubey. Both warriors died, and the main fighting soon followed. The battle was fierce, and both sides suffered heavy losses. The Russian soldiers fought to defend their lands, while Mamai's forces attempted to maintain the Horde's influence. A decisive moment came when a Russian reserve force, traditionally associated with Prince Vladimir of Serpukhov and commander Dmitry Bobrok, launched a surprise attack against the enemy's flank. This disrupted the Horde's formations and caused confusion among its troops. Mamai's army began to retreat, and the Russians won the battle. The victory came at a great cost, and the exact number of casualties remains uncertain. Dmitry Ivanovich later became known as Dmitry Donskoy because of his victory near the Don River. His success increased his prestige and strengthened Moscow's position among the Russian principalities. It also demonstrated that the Golden Horde could be defeated in a major battle. However, the victory did not immediately end Mongol-Tatar domination. In 1382, Tokhtamysh, the ruler of the Golden Horde, attacked and captured Moscow, causing severe destruction. The Russian principalities continued to pay tribute for many years. Nevertheless, the Battle of Kulikovo remained an important turning point in historical memory. It weakened the image of the Horde as an unbeatable power and demonstrated the importance of cooperation between the Russian princes. The process of ending Horde domination continued over the following century and is traditionally associated with the confrontation on the Ugra River in 1480.
