I genuinely don't understand why people are hating on this ending. I thought it was great and unexpected and it left me with a feeling that stuck with me which in my opinion means they did a phenomenal job.

It's not the G-virus. The T-virus in this movie was likely inspired by an enemy from Resident Evil: outbreak that assimilates other things like we see in the movie.

I believe this mutation was because he was one of the 1 in 5-8 billion (or million) to be genetically comparable with the T virus, like how it worked with the TYRANTS in the games such as the MR X’s, and Nemesis.
