At the 2010 Zheng-Kai Marathon in China, Kenyan runner Jacqueline Nyetipei Kiplimo was competing for the win when she noticed another runner struggling at the water stations. The athlete was a Chinese competitor who had no arms, making it difficult for him to drink water on his own. Around the 10-kilometer mark, Kiplimo decided to slow down and help him. Instead of continuing at her own fast pace, she stayed beside him and helped him drink at every water station. She continued doing this from about 10 kilometers into the race until the 38-kilometer mark. By choosing to help the other athlete, Kiplimo lost valuable time in the marathon. She eventually finished in second place instead of winning the race. As a result, she also lost the $10,000 cash prize that came with the victory. Kiplimo later explained why she made that choice. “I decided to run side by side with him up to the 38km mark, supplying water to him at all water stations,” she said. For Kiplimo, helping someone who needed assistance was more important than finishing first. She knew that slowing down could cost her the victory, but she continued to stay beside the runner and make sure he could drink. Her decision meant giving up both the top spot and the prize money. Yet her actions showed that, for her, helping another person mattered more than winning. The story of Kiplimo’s choice became a memorable example of sportsmanship, showing that sometimes the most meaningful victories happen when an athlete chooses another person over the finish line. #Sportsmanship #HeartOfAChampion #RunnersOfTikTok #Inspiration #GoodHuman
