I grew up in a predominantly Black neighborhood, and as a Latina, I experienced different forms of discrimination within the Black community. However, I also know that there are Black people who were raised with respect and without prejudice, and they will stand up for me and defend what is right.
The truth is that racism and prejudice can exist within the Black community itself. For example, when a Black person speaks eloquently, has good manners, or carries themselves with class, some people within the community may call them “white” as an insult, as if speaking properly or behaving respectfully makes someone less Black. That kind of mentality is also a form of prejudice.
Being Black does not automatically make someone free of prejudice, just as being proud of your Black identity does not make you racist. Respect, character, and good manners are not tied to any race, and no one should be judged or ridiculed for how they speak or carry themselves.
