I found a 2 month sublet on a fb group for $1200. then I got a job the next day and started to look for a lease. that lease was trash bc it was september so I spent 5 months there and subletted and moved out and rented a new place I found during off-season. they tried to raise my rent so I moved out and since then I've found stuff. not as hard as ppl make it seem😘

you can get like $1000 rent if you sublet a room in a place like bushwick. do a lot of research on the place to make sure you’re not getting a basement with roaches or rats. but you will have to put up with some bs just to exist here cheaply

I did it after college. I lived in Chelsea for 9 months in 2015 before grad school, in a studio I could afford thanks to school reimbursements and my research job. The key is having a purpose, not just a dream (and also friends/networking). I’ve lived in Chicago, San Diego, and Houston, and each move was driven by an opportunity, mostly academic. Everyone wants to live in Manhattan because it sounds glamorous, but the reality is that rent doesn’t care about your dreams. Have a plan, a stable income, and a reason to be there before making the leap. Otherwise, you’re just paying a premium to struggle with a better skyline.

When I moved to NYC I swore up and down I was going to live in Manhattan. Then everyone kept saying Brooklyn was the place to go. My father’s coworker said go to Astoria. Found 2 apartments in my range almost immediately. I lived in the cheaper one (bigger than the other one) for 15 years because it was rent controlled. It was a great place to live. Don’t limit yourself.

Washington heights. Find something within 2 blocks of a train stop. Get a roommate. Budget yourself properly if you want laundry in apartment, and settle for in building or using a laundromat if it’s close.

Honestly depends what you mean by limited budget and whether you are open to different neighborhoods. If you only mean downtown the cheapest option will be to sublease one room in a share
