One thing I've learned to do to cope with losing someone who meant so much to me—like my dad or my brother—is to celebrate their birthday. On their birthday, I try to focus on celebrating the life that came into mine rather than only mourning the fact that they're no longer here. I'll buy a cake. I'll sing Happy Birthday. I'll invite their family over so we're all together. We'll sit around the table and share stories, memories, and laughter. And yes, there may be a tear or two shed. But the tears aren't the focus of the night. The love is. Because I think there is something incredibly powerful about setting aside one day each year to intentionally celebrate the person we miss so deeply. Their birthday isn't just the day we remember that they died. It's the day we remember that they lived. It's the day we remember their laugh. Their personality. The little things they did that made them who they were. The memories we were lucky enough to make with them. And for a few hours, we get to bring them back into the room through our stories. We get to say their name. We get to laugh about them. We get to cry because we miss them. We get to celebrate the fact that their life touched ours. Maybe celebrating their birthday doesn't make the grief disappear. But it gives our grief somewhere to go. It reminds us that although we can't celebrate another year with them, we can still celebrate another year of being grateful that they existed. So today, I want to ask you: How do you celebrate the birthday of someone you love who has passed away? Do you make their favorite meal? Light a candle? Visit their resting place? Buy a cake? Listen to their favorite music? Or maybe you simply spend the day talking about them. Whatever you do, I hope you know this: You are allowed to celebrate them while still missing them. You are allowed to laugh while grieving. You are allowed to cry during a celebration. Because grief and love can sit at the same table. And sometimes, the most beautiful way to honor someone we've lost is simply to keep celebrating the fact that they were here. 🤍
