@starting.over.at.57: If My Adult Kids Came Back, Things Would Have to Change I love and miss my adult children—but reconciliation would require accountability, respect, and boundaries from all of us. Would you take an estranged family member back without conditions? #StartingOver #AdultChildren #FamilyEstrangement #Boundaries #Healing

Ah hell no, I’m 57 with two grown ass kids and if they EVER need to come back, they’re welcome to. They’re both healthy, employed, decent people and if life goes sideways they can always count on me. Period.

How lucky for you that you can use boundaries when they couldn't as kids.

Abuse means an entirely different thing than when I was a kid. But I had a stepdad. And he was severe. He was wrong in some ways, but it took me maturing myself to realize he's just a man. As an adult he came to my graduation at boot camp and would talk about my multiple deployments, but I barely gave him or my mom the time of day. He was so proud of me. I didn't invite them to my college graduation. ... I was lucky. I was very lucky. But I didn't understand that. My dad died when I was less than 1 yr old. I had known this man as my father since I could remember despite the different surnames. He's gone. And I've just just recently realized that I was wrong. ... He was as different to me as the sun is to the moon. I wish I had matured enough to enjoy his friendship as an adult. And I feel shame that I didn't treat him better. Just letting out some feelings in a rant. Time for work. Thnx.

My alcoholic father came back later to ask for part of my liver because he was dying. I declined. Your children aren’t going to come back.

Same. It’s painful but I’ve been abused by them. Love doesn’t mean acceptance

I completely agree with you Eric. You don't deserve the abuse and peace is a damn hard thing to find. ❤️

Rightfully so! Healing can only happen when there is also mutual respect and understanding! Boundaries are a start. Yes live the remaining of your life on your own terms too

Amen to this. 3 years and my son cut me out of his life. Hope he succeeds in life but I refuse to dwell on it

I agree with you. The only way he could come back is with mutual respect and we would have to start over with a new relationship. That old one would not work for either of us.
