@bookswithamanda212: Replying to @bookswithamanda212 If you’ve led a toothless life then Eternal Recurrence may terrify you. Ponder on the idea presented by Nietzsche about eternal recurrence, how the concept makes you feel and how you respond will (in my opinion) tell you whether or not you’ve been living a toothless life. #philosophy #philosphytiktok #nietzsche #friedrichnietzsche #existentialism

you know, it's really trippy to read it in a foundational educational moment, understand it. watch your life play out, hear it now, and feel levity at how loyaly the these ideas played out in life. but then wonder how influencal reading actually was, or if nietzsche was vocalizing and fleshing out patterns you noticed drew you too it.

Does the demon come at the end of your life or at any point in your life? I feel if it’s at any point it would be hard for me to answer bc I would still have days ahead of me and no clue if something so unimaginably difficult happens that would make me never want to repeat this life. Also, are you aware you’re repeating your life when it happens? What does it mean if you’d be fine repeating bc you enjoyed life, but would ultimately not want to bc you hate the thought of repeating the same thing over again. You crave novelty over the comfort of a good life the next time around?

As someone who reads Nietzsche and I agree with your assessment. The scariest part of the Eternal Recurrence is reliving your scariest moments over and over again. Like you, I grew up in an abusive environment. My life hasn’t been easy. I have had to struggle between a series of events where I’m run over by the truck of life. I’m where I am at today because of those experiences. I am a philosopher because of my experience. I am content where I am at today. Bernard Reginster book “The Affirmation of Life: Nietzsche on overcoming Nihilism” has a very good chapter on this section. Anyone who is interested in this concept should read that book.

He may (A) be describing a form of hell-purgatory, while (B) existential wills are leading to the embrace of seize the day/carpe diem, and lastly, and I stand firm on (C) material and physical circumstances in life do challenge truly embracing life. Imagine a vampire living forever and time never really changes. I lean towards the absurd: life is just life. Love your fate, but I didn’t want my fate, so I will just stretch time out like a vampire. We can’t change what is presented to us in life.

that would suck because if I'm born with the same neurological predispositions and life circumstances each time then whether or not this information will motivate me to live a more fulfilled life or just depress me was decided by some unknownable force eos ago or forever ago, it has merit as a thought experiment I will adimt

The recurrence is one of N’s stickiest ideas. I sometimes wonder what responsibility it gives those who have pondered the thought. He frames it in the negative with an option to see it positively. It’s like how evangelicals have the “good news,” but this is far more terrifying and destabilizing for many individuals. Should one wake the sleepers?

I recently had to stop saying “toothless” in reference to this meaning because I realized that my gay friends think I’m making fun of people who don’t have teeth when I say that like I’m talking about hillbillies or something smdh like no I’m calling that person a coward not a hillbilly
