A 2012 study by LOVEFiLM, a UK-based streaming service, ranked Airplane! (1980) as the funniest movie ever made, using a “laughs per minute” metric. The film delivers an estimated three jokes every minute. Loosely inspired by the serious aviation disaster film Zero Hour! (1957), the story follows Ted Striker (Robert Hays), a traumatized former fighter pilot who must overcome his fear of flying when the flight crew and passengers fall ill from food poisoning. As the plane spirals toward disaster, Striker is forced to take control of the aircraft with guidance from ground control, including the unforgettable deadpan Dr. Rumack, played by Leslie Nielsen. Rather than embracing the suspense of traditional disaster films, Airplane! relentlessly parodies the conventions of the genre, particularly films like Airport. Through rapid-fire wordplay, visual gags, absurd non sequiturs, and completely straight-faced performances, the film turns nearly every moment into a comedic punchline. Its relentless joke-per-minute approach, impeccable timing, and iconic one-liners helped redefine cinematic parody and cemented Airplane! as one of the most influential comedy films ever made. #airplane1980 #classiccomedy #parodyfilm #filmhistory #cinema
