I’m confused.. you posted a video back in January saying the reason you only feed veggies every three days was because the food that they love cause bladder stones. Now you say it’s not the vegetables. It happened to my first trio they had a high calcium diet and two of them got stones. My vet recommended a low calcium diet. I’ve had 20+ pigs since with a low calcium diet and have had no stones. If you have had 4 pigs get bladder stones recently I think it’s quite normal for people to suggest lessening those veggies. I also believe it has something to do with the hardness of water (not sure if you use tap water) and amount of water offered as well. All things to consider. We have one water source per pig and have recently added a whole home water filtration system to also help prevent stones. Seems to be doing the job 👍

wait so stones safe to remove surgically and for a piggy to recover? I understand thats not always the case but my vet recommended putting one of my piggies down or see if they pass because of stones and surgery being too traumatic - is there a way you can decide whats best for a scenario? I love my girls and am so paranoid about making a wrong medical call and subjecting them to stress or more pain 😭

I just can’t get over how big the stones are! Do you think they’d be able to pass them naturally?

Hey, i seen a few videos of you showing these bladderstones, but how do you spot them? Or more like how do you know if a piggy has them?

...I know nothing about guinea pigs beyond "aww cute little fuzzies who need buddies" but wouldn't removing all calcium completely cause bone and teeth issues 💀

I totally agree. One of our boys developed a big stone and had bladder stone removal surgery . Past surgery the exotic vet took away
Spinach, cilantro , parsley
Dandelion greens
Arugula
Basil and Mint
Mustard greens and Turnip greens
Watercress, dill , . I asked for ultrasounds of both piggies bladders after many months of these foods being removed . The ultrasounds still showed a lot of sludge in both of their bladders , which can turn to calcium stones . The vet then said its pointing toward likely being their genetics . I then requested both boys to be put on medication to reduce sludge in bladders and after a few months , i requested repeat ultrasounds which showed a major reduction in sludge . My boys are prone to bloat and in the beginning a lot of veggies were taken away but it didn’t matter , they still got reoccurring bloat and we have two bloat specific meds and pain meds for this . ( We never ever gave them gassy veggies ) . Now we think of veggies as treats for our boys as we already give VitC treats daily.

thank you so much for educating people, my piggies are much happier getting these high calcium veggies 💚 I’ve tried to tell people in the guinea pig community not to be scared of calcium but they all think I’m full of bs lol

ummm look, I'm not a guinea pig but if I were one I would rather have a bladder stone over frail bones and a really bad diet.

I have included more of the yummy food they love in our veggie days as I have seen the guinea pigs urine cloudy white meaning their bodies are working correctly an peeing out the excess I always include lots of cucumber

I attended an interesting talk by gp welfare uk, who also spoke about the habit that our water bottles are nearly always out in the open, and a lot of piggies are reluctant to expose themselves to go and have a drink -he said if you place tunnels and hides near the bottles, they drank so much more!

I’m more familiar with bladder stones/crystals in dogs and cats, but the cause is pretty similar. Sometimes it’s a one time thing and other times reoccurring. It always stems from the body not acting correctly.

This is so reassuring as we have a 9 week old and 6 month old together and all the research has dragged me around by my hair. I do balance with lettuce/cucumber etc but obviously baby needs a fair bit of calcium to help his bones during his growth. Side note, it has shocked me how they grow so quickly, I swear if you watch baby long enough you see him grow before your eyes 😂
