@cusdeb_com: In 2014, Linus Torvalds accurately predicted Valve's role in solving the problem of Linux application distribution, but got the technical approach wrong. At DebConf14, he suggested that Valve wouldn't build 15 different versions of its applications for different distros. Instead, it would create massive, self-contained binaries that could run anywhere. At the time, this seemed like the only practical solution to Linux fragmentation, where a binary might work in one environment but fail in another. However, things took a different path. Rather than packing everything into a single executable, the Linux ecosystem embraced portable runtimes and containerization. Today, Valve runs its games in containers on SteamOS.

I don't really understand linux obsession with linked libraries, i don't need 20 apps breaking because one of them updated the poopfart module. storage is free

Huge binaries are not the issue - lib hell is. I‘d rather waste 2-400mb per app but they work

I wouldn't trust anyone who doesn't see the value in games, something so necessary and inherent to life even animals have an instinct for it.

Essentially, yes. A lot of Linux cultists like to joke about WSL, but so much of Linux gaming relies on Wine and its derivatives (eg: Proton). In fact, many games perform worse on their native Linux version than the Windows version run under Proton. That's so embarrassing.

I don’t know what binaries are but they must be a hassle if the guy that made OS says its a hassle

Apparently he said this 12 years ago. Valve built Steam Linux Runtime due to this problem.

Why can't Linux use SxS assemblies or a similar approach or versioninng storage?
If the app needs to use a special lib why can't this app be shipped with a dedicated DLL?

no gaming company is gonna save Linux Desktop. A Desktop is office software. Only when Microsoft makes MS Office for Linux it becomes a Desktop Computer. Apple had this lethal problem in the 90s and solved it quickly by signing a contract with Microsoft that brought MS Officer for Mac, making it a mainstream Desktop Computer.
