@gamerswaveuk: Episode 1 of Critical Reception - How did video game reviews go from a multi billion dollar industry to practically worthless? I explore the history of reviews, why magazine exclusives were big business, and how the internet changed the game forever. #criticalreception #gamereviews #gamingnews
steam reviews and review system is fantastic. criitic podcasts are a much better and genuine delivery method

The video game review journalists are stuck in the same shitty position as automotive journalist reviewing cars. If you say the product is bad you won’t be allowed access to a press event / review copy. Thus, you can’t review the product in question until everyone who was invited already has.

Streaming. I've bought so many have just from watching randomly coming across streamers. I got into Cities Skylines because I came across Biffa on YouTube.

So the pivot to video pushed by Facebook obvs really important. Fabricated numbers that made a pivot away from written articles in the mid 2010s seem worth pursuing destroyed a lot of games writing coverage. Ad revenue declining and not being commensurate with rising living costs has made individual review editorial less valuable probably right? Venture capital has slowly eaten the few outlets still standing which inevitably leads to a round of layoffs for the people working at any given publication. Review coverage can be closer to branding for mainstream large scale games websites. Guides writing has become a better evergreen moneymaker. Change away from brick and mortar probs have a smaller effect Id think at least killing things like e3 where more exclusive coverage was given to established 3rd parties. The breadth of the industry also has evolved. Gamespot used to have an absurd ambition to review every game which released. That was untenable then and is beyond sisyphean now. The in depth knowledge a reviewer is capable of cannot stretch as far as the most dedicated of genre and live service fans unless that is their sole beat which is a difficult value add as a role at a games review place. How relevant is a review as a definitive article when individual experience of some game can be defined by what the latest patch is? While streamers and others have filled the void with unfiltered footage and reactions that are very valuable, more than ever these audiences are co opted as marketing arms of the game release cycle and don’t serve the same role of uninvested writer. Even though streamers and influencers might be allowed to give honest impressions at early coverage events or promos, the invitation is extended to those that are more likely to give a warm reception based on vetting, compared to less invested games writers at magazines or websites doing coverage as a job.

one aspect you are missing from the story is that reviews were functionally replaced by video essays or let's plays.

Embargoes leveled the playing field but led to an undignified scramble. They're still used in film and books BUT if the game is a live service you can't work like those channels.

I look forward to the episode where you cover the corruption. Games studios were buying reviews with free game copies, gifts and trips.

The only existing core-video game magazine here in Sweden is “Videospels Magasinet”. And its not even driven as a corporate but as fan-made. Giants like Super Play, Level and others are long gone. The last corporate-owned magazine here is “Robot”. Pages like IGN and GameSpot aren’t just “video game”-pages but also everything else too who covers movies, entertainment and such. They just took way too much, much more than they can chew…

So much has changed in the gaming space since the 90s! Most importantly, we have changed; our habits, our expectations and our cynicism. We were all burnt by various underhanded gaming practices that often don't find its way into any review (sometimes intentionally). We are at a point that it's easier to trust a random bloke who writes a steam review, than a fancy journalist from a major gaming website. There is a good chance that the random bloke knows what he is talking about better too. There are YouTubes dissecting games, streamers playing games, TikTok AI-talkie accounts reading steam reviews... hell, you have tiktoks done by people involved in making the game, telling you - directly - why you should give their product a chance. This is such a different landscape (and far more saturated landscape) compared to the 90s

I imagine as the ability to share a review has shifted from needing a publisher to anyone being able to do it, has meant any margin had been eroded. Your review almost needs to be an entertainment product within itself to survive.

reviews haven't disappeared, just the delivery evolved. Still lots of youtubers making money by posting closed beta games, and then tiktok and twitch showcasing live play footage after release

the people who review the games no longer have much in common with the people who buy them. in fact they seem to hate each other.
then obviously problems with access journalism
