Don't jump straight into: "I will study Korean diligently because the Korean language is important." Instead, tell us why learning Korean matters to you. What motivated you to learn it? Maybe you realised it would help you communicate better in your future career. Maybe it would help you connect with people. Maybe it would help you conduct research more effectively. Before you tell me your plan, help me understand your relationship with languages. Why does learning a language matter to you? Note: Your introduction does not necessarily have to start with Korean. For example, someone who has studied other languages before can use that experience to show their passion for language learning. Maybe you learnt French or Spanish during a particular period of your life. Maybe you learnt another language because of your career goals. Maybe your experience with language opened your eyes to another culture and way of thinking. The point is not to create a dramatic story. But to show the reviewer: "This person already has a genuine connection with languages. Learning Korean is not just because GKS requires it. It also shows that they already understand what learning a new language requires, which means adapting to Korean language learning may not feel completely unfamiliar", it gives them confidence that you understand the commitment required to learn Korean too. However, don't think that your introduction must only talk about learning other international language. Be creative. Language learning is bigger than just foreign language certificates. For example, Nigeria is one of the most linguistically diverse countries in the world, with hundreds of ethnic groups and languages. What is your tribe? What languages can you speak outside your mother tongue? Maybe you grew up in a multilingual environment where you had to communicate with people from different ethnic backgrounds. Or you learnt another Nigerian language because of your family, your community, school, business, or friendships. That is also language learning. Because at the heart of every language is the ability to understand people who are different from you. So if you have never studied an international language, don't panic. Your story could come from learning another Nigerian language. It could come from interacting with people from different cultures. It could come from your work, business, or personal experiences. The goal is not to impress the reviewer with how many languages you know. The goal is to show that you already understand the value of language as a bridge between people and cultures. And that mindset is what you will carry into learning Korean. For example, my own introduction focused on how learning languages expanded my understanding of cultures, histories, cuisines, and ways of life. I connected my previous experience learning French and Spanish with my later interest in Korean language and culture. Your story will be different. And that is exactly the point. Your language study plan should not sound like everyone else's. It should sound like YOU. Watch out for Part 2.
