That's exactly why a child with ADHD doesn't hear their parents the first time — and you have to repeat yourself ten times. It is not selective hearing. It is not defiance. It is not a child who has decided that what you are saying is not worth registering. It is a nervous system in which the pathway between receiving auditory information and converting it into actionable attention is genuinely, neurologically unreliable. The ADHD brain has a working memory deficit — the system that holds incoming information long enough for it to become a thought, a plan, an action. Your instruction arrived. It was processed at the level of sound. But the transfer from auditory input to working memory — the step that produces "I heard that and I need to do something about it" — did not complete reliably. The instruction disappeared before it could become action. Not because your child chose to ignore it. Because the neural handoff didn't happen. There is also the attentional component. The ADHD brain is not attending to its environment in the same continuous way a neurotypical brain does. It dips in and out — captured by internal thoughts, by more interesting stimuli, by the sensory experience of the moment. When you speak from across the room to a child whose attention is elsewhere, you are not speaking to a child who is choosing not to listen. You are speaking into a gap in their attentional coverage that they are not aware of and cannot control. What actually works: say their name and wait for eye contact before the instruction. One instruction at a time. Close the physical distance. Make it visual where possible. These are not accommodations for bad behaviour. They are the delivery method that works with the ADHD brain's attentional and working memory architecture — instead of against it. 💛 Everything in this post is covered in depth in the book I wrote for parents of children with ADHD. Comment "ADHD" below — and I'll send it to you. 💛 . . . . . #ADHDparenting #ADHDkids #ADHDmom #neurodivergent #ADHDawareness
