Warts are skin growths commonly caused by certain types of human papillomavirus (HPV). Some disappear on their own, while others may persist or spread. The good news is that several treatments can help remove or reduce them, depending on their type, size, number, and location. 1. Salicylic acid This topical medicine gradually softens and removes layers of thickened skin, helping to reduce common warts, particularly on the hands and feet. 2. Cryotherapy A healthcare professional uses extreme cold, usually liquid nitrogen, to destroy wart tissue. More than one session may be needed. 3. Cantharidin This medicine is applied by a healthcare professional and causes a blister to form beneath the wart, helping the affected tissue separate from the skin. 4. 5-Fluorouracil (5-FU) A prescription medicine sometimes used for persistent or difficult-to-treat skin warts under professional guidance. 5. Imiquimod cream This medicine stimulates a local immune response in the skin. It is used for certain types of warts, particularly external genital warts, and may be prescribed for selected cases. 6. Podophyllin This substance has historically been used by healthcare professionals for external genital warts. Because it can cause serious toxicity if absorbed, safer alternatives are generally preferred. It must not be confused with podofilox (podophyllotoxin), a different medicine used for certain external genital warts. 7. Trichloroacetic acid (TCA) A healthcare professional may apply this chemical to destroy wart tissue. It requires careful application because it can damage surrounding skin. 8. Bleomycin injections In selected cases of stubborn skin warts, a specialist may inject this medicine directly into the wart when other treatments have failed. 9. Zinc supplements Zinc supports normal immune function, but evidence that taking zinc treats warts is limited. It is not a proven cure, and supplementation is not necessary for everyone. IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION These treatments are not interchangeable. The right option depends on the type and location of the wart. Do not attempt professional procedures or apply strong chemicals such as cantharidin, podophyllin, or TCA yourself. Incorrect use can cause burns, severe skin damage, scarring, or poisoning. Ordinary skin-wart treatments should not be used on genital warts or the face without appropriate advice. Seek assessment if a growth bleeds, changes, becomes painful, spreads rapidly, or you are unsure whether it is actually a wart. Although treatment can remove visible warts, it may not eliminate HPV from the body, and warts can return. This content is for informational and educational purposes only. Consult a qualified healthcare professional or visit a hospital for appropriate assessment and care.
