@backpackerflipflops: Do you remember Matthew Shepard’s story? There is a memorial bench on the University of Wyoming campus, which years later, many people still leave items and pay their respects at.
the sad death of Matthew shepherd was the catalyst for me to stop tolerating homophobic people in my life. I was a child when it happened but I knew then that his death was so wrong.

The two men convicted of murdering Matthew Shepherd are still incarcerated, Aaron McKinney and Russell Henderson are both serving two consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole. May they rot in hell.

Matthew Shepard was the start of my deconstruction from religion. I remember the documentary and sobbing over what was done to him. And the people in my life kept excusing it because of his 'lifestyle'. That snapped something in me and I've never been the same since.

honestly, it's so weird seeing the support he has and that knowing how red our state is

Serendipity :
Reports described how Shepard was beaten so brutally that his face was completely covered in bl00d, except where it had been partially cleansed by his tears. Those 2 men told Matthew they were offering him a ride home. Devastating.

Matthew's story was soul-crushing to learn about when I was one of two out people in my rural deeply conservative high school. I never faced bullying that I felt physically threatened my life, but the possibility was always there beneath their words. May he rest in peace, and know how important his story is to so many of us.

I was a kid in Chicago watching Matthew Shepards case as a kid. It’s weird I moved to Fort Collins co, and poudre valley is the hospital they transported him to from Laramie. No one around here even seems to talk about it. But back home, it was a big big deal in 98. Matthew’s case showed me how important it was to be the voice and stand up for my friend Mickey who was gay. Matthew died for being himself but his death changed the world in a good way. Just sucks people don’t talk about him more. A good guy who was killed way too soon over some weird insecure, and sensitive men

I was 15 when he passed. It took me years to come out of the closet over his passing.

Rest in peace, Matthew. I think of you often and wish you and your family peace. No one deserves to be treated this way. [Twin hearts]
