Voyager 1 is the farthest human-made object in history, launched by [NASA] on September 5, 1977. Initially designed for a five-year mission to study Jupiter and Saturn, the probe far exceeded its lifespan and became the first spacecraft to enter interstellar space in August 2012. It famously carries the Golden Record, a gold-plated copper phonograph record containing sounds, music, and images depicting the diversity of life and culture on Earth for any intelligent extraterrestrial life that may find it. The spacecraft is currently located at a staggering distance of over 25.7 billion kilometers (172.3 AU) from the Sun, traveling through the constellation Ophiuchus at a speed of about 17 km/s. Because of this immense distance, a radio signal sent from Earth takes nearly 24 hours to reach the probe, requiring the massive antennas of [NASA]'s Deep Space Network ([DSN]) to maintain communication and collect data from its remaining active scientific instruments. Power is provided by radioisotopes, but this energy supply diminishes every year, forcing engineers to systematically shut down equipment to keep the probe alive. Most recently, in April 2026, the low-energy charged particle instrument was permanently turned off after nearly 49 years of operation to save electricity. By the end of the 2020s, the power will likely deplete entirely, causing Voyager 1 to go silent forever as it continues its silent, eternal journey through the Milky Way. #scary #astro #cosmos #astrophysics
