Pink Floyd: The Wall (1982) The film grew out of a 1979 album that Roger Waters conceived almost as a form of self-therapy. It follows Pink, a rock star who builds a wall around himself out of trauma, one brick at a time: the loss of his father in war, a suffocating childhood, a failed marriage, the crushing weight of fame. Each trauma is a brick. By the end Pink finds himself completely sealed off behind that structure, before symbolically putting himself on trial in order to finally be set free. Director Alan Parker wove the live-action footage together with fifteen minutes of animation by Gerald Scarfe, a political illustrator known for his sharp, biting caricatures. His imagery, hammers marching in formation like fascist soldiers, flowers mating and devouring each other, teachers turned into meat grinders, isn't just visual decoration. It's the only way the film manages to express what words alone couldn't. There's almost no spoken dialogue in the film. The music carries nearly every moment of the story, and several songs were partially re-recorded specifically for the film, with notable differences from their original album versions. The central image of marching hammers becomes one of the most direct metaphors ever put on screen against fascism and mass conformity, showing how someone isolated by pain can end up becoming a small dictator themselves. It's no accident that Pink, at his most isolated, imagines himself as an authoritarian demagogue addressing a crowd that cheers him on without thinking. At the Cannes premiere, the reaction was one of near-total bewilderment. As the story goes, Steven Spielberg walked out of the midnight screening and turned to the head of Warner Bros., silently mouthing:
