Winter is coming to the United States, and the big question is: Which states will experience the heaviest snowfall during the 2026–2027 winter season? 🌨️ From the snow-covered Rocky Mountains to the freezing Great Lakes and the winter storms of the Northeast, snowfall across America can vary dramatically depending on geography, elevation and weather patterns. 🏔️ The Snowiest Regions in America Mountainous states such as Colorado, Montana, Wyoming, Idaho and Washington regularly experience significant snowfall, especially at higher elevations. Some mountain areas can accumulate well over 60 inches of snow during a typical winter. 🌨️ The Northern States & Great Lakes Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan and parts of New York are known for their cold winters and heavy snowfall. Lake-effect snow can produce enormous accumulations when cold air moves across the relatively warmer waters of the Great Lakes. ❄️ The Midwest & Central United States States like Nebraska, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana and Ohio often experience a mixture of snowstorms, freezing temperatures and occasional winter rain. Total snowfall can change significantly from one winter to another. ☀️ Will the Southern States See Snow? Snow is much less common across the Gulf Coast, including Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida. However, unusual winter weather patterns can occasionally bring snow and ice even to areas that rarely experience freezing conditions. 🌡️ What Will Influence Winter 2026–2027? Several major weather patterns influence snowfall across the United States, including El Niño and La Niña, the jet stream, Arctic air outbreaks and the tracks of winter storm systems. A shift in any of these patterns can make the difference between a relatively mild winter and one filled with major snowstorms. ⚠️ Important: This hand-drawn map illustrates broad geographical snowfall patterns and possible winter conditions. It is not an official state-by-state snowfall forecast for winter 2026–2027.
