Kenya has confirmed its first imported case of Bundibugyo virus disease, a severe form of Ebola. The patient, a Kenyan citizen, became ill while living in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, travelled by road through Beni to Kampala, and then flew to Nairobi, arriving on 3 October 2026. The patient was isolated shortly after arrival, later tested positive, and died on the night of 5 October. Kenyan health authorities are now intensifying surveillance and contact tracing. So far, 28 contacts have been listed, including family members and healthcare workers. Authorities are also tracing 23 passengers and 4 crew members from the same flight, with follow-up and quarantine planned for people assessed to be at risk. Kenya had already been on high alert since May. By 6 October, the country had screened more than 652,000 travellers, tested 267 suspected samples, and trained around 5,000 health workers in Ebola prevention and management. Isolation units have also been identified in 27 high-risk counties. Important: this is currently an imported case, not evidence of a large local outbreak in Kenya. WHO says the priority is to detect any additional cases quickly and prevent the virus from establishing sustained transmission. WHO also currently advises against travel or trade restrictions based on the available information. Follow @TheVirusShow for major outbreak updates. 💬 Do you think Kenya can contain this before local transmission begins? #Ebola #Kenya #OutbreakUpdate #GlobalHealth #TheVirusShow
