T.B.T.: In 1991, the 31-year-old Queen Salawa Abeni gifted Nigerian music another masterpiece — Experience. No conversation about the history of Nigerian music, particularly Yoruba and Waka music, is complete without mentioning the remarkable Salawa Abeni. In 1991, Salawa Abeni released Experience, another memorable work that further strengthened her reputation as one of the most important figures in Nigerian Waka music. But her journey to becoming a musical icon had begun many years earlier. At just 15 years old, she made a remarkable entrance into the Nigerian music industry with her 1976 debut album, Late General Murtala Ramat Mohammed, released on Leader Records. The album became a major commercial success and is widely remembered as a landmark recording in the history of Yoruba popular music. It reportedly sold more than a million copies, making Abeni one of the earliest female Nigerian recording artists to achieve such extraordinary commercial success. Her rise was extraordinary. With her distinctive voice, energetic performances, storytelling ability and mastery of the Waka tradition, she transformed herself from a teenage recording sensation into one of Nigeria’s most celebrated female musicians. By the time Experience emerged in 1991, Abeni was already a household name. Her music carried the traditional rhythms and social commentary of Waka while continuing to connect with changing generations of Nigerian listeners. 35 years later , her legacy remains firmly etched in Nigerian music history. From a teenage girl making history in the 1970s to an enduring symbol of Waka music, Salawa Abeni’s career is a testament to talent, resilience, cultural influence and longevity. A true living legend of Nigerian music. 👑 ❤️ 📚 📚 UNTOLD CHRONICLES AND THEATER OF BLOOD — Volume One is now out in hardcopy Hold history in your hands today.
