This is the third schoolhouse we found that was on our list while exploring Delaware County, and this one like the others it was definitely worth the stop! Tucked away in Dunraven, near Margaretville, NY, stands the beautiful Old Stone School House, District 10, a little piece of history that has been standing for more than 200 years. The schoolhouse was built in 1820 using local stone. According to local history, Thankful Louise Grant, wife of Col. John Grant, wanted the school built of stone so it would be a permanent building. Looking at it today, I’d say she got her wish! By 1842, District 10 reportedly had 87 school-age children, and teachers at the time were earning around $2.25 a week. Imagine all the generations of children who walked through these doors, sat inside this little schoolhouse, and learned their lessons by the light of its windows. But this building was more than a school. Over the years it also became a gathering place for the Dunraven community, hosting religious services, Sunday school, meetings and other community gatherings. The little school finally closed in 1920, when only six students remained and the children began attending school in Margaretville. Perhaps one of the most interesting parts of its story came decades later. During the 1950s, construction of the Pepacton Reservoir dramatically changed the surrounding area and resulted in the loss or relocation of many buildings and communities. Yet this old stone schoolhouse remained. Today, Old Stone School House District 10 is listed on the National and State Registers of Historic Places, preserving a piece of the old Dunraven community for future generations. We absolutely love finding these old one-room schoolhouses along the backroads. Every one looks a little different, but they all leave you wondering about the children who once filled them with voices and laughter. ❤️🏫 Another Delaware County treasure still standing after more than two centuries. #school #old #History
