I I say this all the time! It’s a privilege to be a good person, but at the same time, we don’t live behind a veil of ignorance. I’m aware that never having faced certain circumstances impacts my ability to be a good person, because there are things I can only understand to a certain extent without experiencing them myself. But especially in today’s world, where it’s so easy to be parasocial in all kinds of ways, I think we have the ability to observe, learn about, and internalize other people’s circumstances without having experienced them ourselves. That doesn’t give us the lived experience to speak as an authority, but it does give us the perspective and nuance to make conscious choices about how we treat others and how we show up in a world where we understand that suffering and injustice exist.

I think about this a lot actually, I heard a friend once say “Until you’ve tested your morals you have ideals not morals”. A lot of the “morals” we have are a result of the position we are in. I always say how much I hate lying and actively try not to lie, however, I’ve never been confronted with a time when lying could literally save my life, same thing goes for stealing and anything else. “You are only principled because doing the right thing costs you nothing”, is such a key thing to recognize. That’s one of the reasons I believe the whole concept of a “good” or “bad” person is incredibly flawed.

i think about the vile things ultra wealthy people do. i wonder how far some of us, myself included, would tread the line of being moral or far we'd push the rules and laws simply because everyone and everything has a price tag. i also ask myself how far would i go for the sake of money. what's the worst thing i would do for a life changing opportunity or life changing money. i wonder what my true price tag is

I have said this verbatim in a conversation I had with a friend recently. We spend so much of our time debating whether we are good or bad. But being presented with the trials or a certain dilemma can reveal the character of the person. It is both a challenge about who you really are versus what are the limits of human nature.

I think we all underestimate how much we actually have principles. I have gotten numerous chances to cheat for humongous amounts of money and I've never taken it. I don't know if I can say it's because I'm a good person. It's just - the stress of living with having done something like that is so much that it's not worth it for me. I value my peace of mind so much that I'll choose to do good for it. Not sure it's the same thing as being inherently good but it's enough of a hindrance to me doing bad things.
