The Battle of Karbala is one of the most famous events in Islamic history. It took place in 61 AH (680 CE) in the Karbala region of Iraq. The battle was fought between the army of the Umayyad Caliph Yazid ibn Mu'awiya and the supporters of Hussein ibn Ali, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). The events began when Hussein refused to pledge allegiance to Yazid, objecting to the manner in which he assumed power. Hussein traveled to Iraq in response to messages from the people of Kufa, but found himself besieged in Karbala with a small number of his family and companions. On the tenth of Muharram, known as Ashura, the battle took place, resulting in the martyrdom of Hussein and most of his followers.
