@documentingchill: A massive data center in Virginia ran its emergency diesel generators for nearly 24 hours. The noise and fumes became so overwhelming that a nearby resident said he had to leave his own home. And state regulators said they couldn't order the generators to stop. 😳 In July 2026, a Vantage Data Centers facility in Sterling, Virginia, experienced a failure in its normal power system. To keep its servers running, the facility switched to emergency diesel generators. But there was a problem. The data center sits close to residential homes. And those generators kept running throughout the night. Residents reported loud, continuous noise and diesel fumes spreading into the surrounding neighbourhood. One homeowner, Greg Pirio, said the fumes were affecting his breathing so badly that he eventually left his house and travelled around 15 miles to stay with his daughter. He also reported noise levels above the county's nighttime limit. And all of this was happening while the region was already experiencing poor air quality from wildfire smoke. But when the situation was brought to Virginia's environmental regulators, they explained that they couldn't simply order the generators to shut down. The facility's environmental permit allowed emergency generator operation following a power failure. That meant regulators could investigate potential violations afterward, but they couldn't immediately stop the equipment from running under those circumstances. The generators eventually stopped after nearly 24 hours. The incident has raised serious questions about what happens when enormous data centers are built close to residential communities. These facilities are designed to keep running even when their normal power systems fail. But for the people living next door, that backup power can mean hours of noise and pollution. And in this case, one man said he had to leave his own home while the servers kept running.

CR :
This isn’t true. The generators don’t emit black smoke and run very clean.

Why don’t they have SCR and DEF systems on those diesel generators…

Well that is what happens when you remove the EPA rules.

Why can't anyone really stop these things even though it's really really wrong for us?

They haven’t seen the haze in Singapore and Malaysia yet. It’s like they have a thousand generators running full steam for the last 2 months. 😅

We NEED more Data Centers but really they should build them next to all the multimillion dollar McMansions in NoVa

not true, emergency generators do not smoke like that, at all, ever.

Seems like the diesel engine fuel injectors are overfuelling. Needs a valve lash and some injector cleaner and it will be all good. No need to worry about

The picture you show is meant to mislead. Ive worked at diesel plants that run an entire small city and you would struggltto see the exhaust 1 min. After start up. So how credible is the rest of the story?

They have special fluids that don't cause electronics to short why aren't they circulating those fluids to keep everything cold?

That's misinformation and false.......all generators whether they are on a data center or not have catalytic converters and DEF systems on them just like vehicles...anti data center side has lost credibility
