japan is notorious for not having trash cans available so unfortunately it points to cultural issues

how is stuff like making ecobricks not a thing there? even if they can’t be properly cleaned/used it still majorly condenses the trash so it’s not blowing everywhere and into the water. they’d rather just throw it on the ground 💀

This is a very informative take; however it ignores the glaring fact that these people have eyes, can see the trash piling up and affecting their environment. The real reason is the lack of infrastructure due to rampant corruption. In addition the caste system leads people to only care about what directly and immediately impacts only them

Unless there is literally no sanitation infrastructure, throwing your trash into the street is still a choice no matter how normalized it is.

Respectfully, this is a little bit of a reach… Single used plastic has been readily in use for more than my entire life and I’m 28. At this point, it’s not engrained habit. It’s laziness.

plastic has been around since like the 60's, in that whole time they couldn't be like hey yo let's not do that anymore 😂😂

theres an indian youtuber who did a social exp abt this. he cleaned a patch of land in front of his building. after that nobody wanted to litter there. perhaps it's like the broken window theory.

if there’s litter everywhere, you are more inclined to littering. That’s why it doesn’t change :(

it is partially caste related. people think throwing away garbage or cleaning is the work of untouchables and beneath them

It's actually much simpler: Indian cities have very little tax authority, and states haven't redistributed seats in their parliaments in decades. So cities have no political influence to fund it at the state level or reform local funding laws

Caste system, the lowest of the caste has to clean up for others. Those of a higher class think it’s beneath them to clean
