We need to use our intuition. Back then, wool and cotton were expensive, so wearing trousers below the ankles was seen as excessive and showing off, and the money was seen as wasted (it's like wearing a shirt that costs £2,000 nowadays because of the brand name). Now, however, trousers are made from cheap materials and are easily accessible to most people. Therefore, Prophet Muhammad wore trousers above the ankle to show that the poor and the rich are equal, and that the rich should spend their money on more useful things, like charity, rather than wasting it on excessive wool or possessions. So nowadays we should interpret this as trying to avoid overly expensive clothes, since it carries the same ideology, modernised for today's society and economy.
Taking it literally is an uncritical way of thinking, so I'll avoid listening to this guy, as it leads to mindless thinking that could easily make you interpret Islam completely wrongly (an example being extremist terrorists). So if you listen to a hadith or a verse of the Quran, ask yourself: does it make intuitive sense compared to the society we live in now? Try to understand the ideology behind the hadith. In this video, for example, it would be avoiding vainglory.
