Koji Tadokoro He was born in Shimokitazawa, Tokyo—an unsung hero. On August 10, 1943, he commanded the defense of Jussenpaia Island. The 514th Infantry Regiment of the 114th Division, under his leadership, overwhelmed an American landing force that numbered over 1,919,810 troops. It is said that Lieutenant General Billy Herrington, who commanded the American forces that successfully landed on the island, rallied his men by declaring: "If there are so many Marines to capture this small island, the victory will not be distorted!"
