The first week with a newborn is stressful, overwhelming but also absolutely wonderful. So much changes from one day to the next. Most of it is completely normal, it just helps to know what’s coming. So here’s your baby’s first week, day by day, what’s normal for baby, feeding, sleep and you. Some highlights: Day 1, the sleepy, adjusting newborn and that first black meconium poop Day 2, “second night syndrome,” suddenly wanting to feed and be held all night Day 3, your milk comes in and the nappies start changing colour Day 4-5, jaundice usually peaks, and the “baby blues” can hit for you too Day 5-6, peeling skin, baby acne, cone head, all the funny-but-normal newborn stuff Day 6-7, the fussy evenings begin, but you’ve made it through the hardest week The thread through all of it: there’s a huge range of normal in week one, and your baby is just figuring out life on the outside. Be gentle with yourself, feed on demand, and lean on any help you can get. This is general guidance, not medical advice. A few things are worth getting checked: jaundice that shows up in the first day and keeps getting worse instead of better, a baby too sleepy to feed, spreading redness or a bad smell around the cord, fewer than 6 wet nappies a day after day 5, or baby blues that last beyond 2 weeks or feels heavier. Trust your gut and call your pediatrician. Sources: newborn care guidance from the NHS and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). 📌 Save this for the newborn days 👶 Share it with a new or expecting parent Which day are you on right now? How was your experience?👇 #newbornbaby #momtobe #firsttimemum #newborncare #MomsofTikTok
