NI does not fully cover the state pension burden and the balance comes from general taxation including income tax.

Employers still have to pay the employer contributions even for those that have reached retirement age.

It is completely understandable that the young people of today are worried about how the future of the State Pension will look in the future.
We can't predict this as we don't know what the economics will look like in 30/40 years time.
It doesn't help to lay blame or be unkind to today's pensioners. they didn't write the Pension Act , they followed the rules they were given and paid in as told. The goal posts changed and retirement ages shifted. However I am sure some would happily retire earlier and yet the young ones enter the work place.
One word or caution it's difficult to predict what the economy will be like down the road and if saving will help but may never be enough.

It’s classed as a benefit and is the only benefit that’s classed as income . Better to not work and pay NI you’d be better off

I am the comentor I stopped working at 60 could have stopped on considerably less money so carried on until 60
I realise I won't get any sympathy from Sean and I am not looking for any and don't need it.
The reason I won't claim my state pension (in Jan)is due to bad financial planning . I was busy enjoying my retirement and realised if I claimed the state pension all if it would be taxed at 40% so I will wait till the next tax year
What I know for sure is I pay thousands of pounds in tax and that tax goes into the exact same pot as NI does so my tax is paying people's stare pensions now and will be when I claim my pension as well
Nowi am going to fess up and say I did not know about the nif. However having read about it I know know the vast majority of the money to fund pensions and the nhs comes from general taxation so yes I am pay towards people's pensions
I think of greater concern is how old people in Scotland pay for young people's education when young people have never contributed to the system. That's got to cost 30 to 40k and as they never pay thus back it's clearly unsustainable and the system should be replaced with one where young nstudents pay their own way

Nothing to see here :
I think the whole NI exemption is outdated now. Arguably quite an easy win to reintroduce it or; to abolish it and put the different on income taxes

This is true, personally we don't pay however our employers do continue to pay.
If you have private pensions you pay tax on them and on any earned income at a higher rate.

So many pensioners are ignorant on pension, you did not pay all your life to your pension, you paid for other people’s pensions and us today are paying for your pension, financial illiteracy is rife, and sorry no excuses when you get to that age
