@meet_the_robinsons321: I'm going to be a little vulnerable because sometimes being the parent of a child with a disability feels lonely. Homecoming wasn't quite the experience I had imagined for Miles. There weren't group chats coordinating outfits, plans for pictures, or a group of friends arranging to arrive together. And watching those groups of teenagers walking in, I felt that little ache in my heart. I don't often share these feelings because I never want anyone in our community to feel bad or think it's their child's responsibility to include mine. But sometimes I just wish these things happened naturally for him. **Did Miles have an amazing night? Absolutely!** He danced, smiled, and had the best time. But two things can be true. He can have the best night while my heart quietly wishes some parts of his teenage experience looked different. I share so many of our highs here, but I want to be honest about the harder moments too. I know other parents understand this feeling. Because inclusion isn't just about being at the dance. Sometimes it's about everything that happens before you walk through the doors. ❤️

You should have hired a high end prostitute to go with him. He would have had a great time. Sometimes parents just don’t think !!!

My son, who is 17 and has autism, didn’t even go. He doesn’t have a single friend and it breaks my heart. The past 2 years he has put ‘a friend’ on his Christmas list 😭

My senior year I made sure to ask one of the kids in my class to homecoming. I was a TA for the special needs class and the smile on his face the whole night was everything.

I’ll never forget in 7th grade a boy with autism asked this girl to the dance & she humiliated him so bad in-front of everyone at lunch… i didn’t even hesitate to ask him if he’d go with me. We had so much fun that night & he told me at the end of the dance he loved me 🥹 i knew what he meant though.. I love you too George I hope life is treating you good <3

I regret and wish i was a better man back in highschool and made sure the kids with special needs were also involved. I always was nice and friendly but i never considered how lonely it may feel being left out of the things you mentioned. Bless this young man, he will do great things on day🩷 and might i say he looks very dapper dressed up, a proper date any woman should regret not being with!

@Fab8040: My daughter had a so called friend that said they were going together. She even went dress shopping with her. HOCO night she told my daughter she was on her way to our house and never showed up, so my daughter went by herself. She went to most school events by herself, no date or friend group. Just because she didn’t fit in with the crowd. This was her that year.

He’s better off without all the fake friends, drama and gossip. But as a mom I understand, I hope he had the best night. ☺️

Its sad… not just for the kids with disabilities… my son was just shy and didn’t have a “group” of friends… he went… he tried so hard to be there and then he texted me to come pick him up… he was just too alone… it broke my heart… he never did find a group in hs and i think even into adulthood he feels lonely… it makes me sad

My best friend growing up was a young man w cerebral palsy. Made sure I invited him everywhere and he was included. His mom sacrificed her life to make sure he could go to almost everything. I’ll never forget her crying n thanking me when I was like 15. I eventually moved away n lost contact but think about him every so often

Sometimes I have to remember that they’re probably 100% happy and we are the ones worrying for them 😅

We experienced this with our daughter Jazmyn as well! She has a severe intellectual disability. However the village stepped in and made her prom an amazing experience and she had the time of her life. She has been to more proms than me and my 3 sisters combined ever went to. It ached my heart a little that she wanted those experiences, so we did our best to make them happen in a unique way. I’m glad Miles had an amazing night!

My daughter’s aide went with his wife to hang out with her. Her “friend” ditched her for a boy. The ASB teacher had some girls take pics with her in the Photo Booth. I had such a heavy heart all night, full of anxiety. We only want the best for them, and not them be sad. I’m glad he had a great night, my daughter says he’s cute 🥰

I know a lot of kids who don’t have a disability and stayed at home because they didn’t have friends or were too scared to go alone. Your kid was brave and ready to take the world. Good job!! You are raising a brave soul.

all of the special needs kids in my high school back in the day was adopted by a senior. we took them to games, dances, hung out with them at school events and would go over to their house and hang out. it wasnt appropriate to take them to parties but we would have because we all ended up as friends.

So … you have to remember .. you idea of happiness and fun may not be his … it’s so hard to accept that .. but if he had fun and is happy , that’s all that matter - you are doing amazing and it’s ok to mourn some of the things he will miss out on. But if he went .. had fun .. that’s a win !!
