He's a patrol officer with the Deer Park Police Department. He's also a K-9 handler. His partner is a Belgian n@rcotics dog named Roni. They've worked side by side since 2018. On a Tuesday in January 2023, the two of them came back from training. The wind started picking up. Roni was in his kennel, in the back of the squad car. Then the sky turned. An EF-3 tornado was heading right for the station. Nitchman was already inside. He looked out. The car was still sitting in the lot. He thought about the debris. He thought about the car flipping over. "I couldn't do that to him," he said. "I couldn't have him out there during that." He ran outside. Security cameras caught every second. Lightning flashed. Rain came sideways. Visibility dropped to zero. He couldn't see more than a few feet. The wind was so strong he could barely get the car door open. Then another problem. Roni didn't want to come out. He's a smart dog. He knew something was wrong. "Come on, buddy," Nitchman kept saying. "Let's go." Seconds ticked by. Finally, Roni jumped down. The two of them ran around the squad car, back toward the station. They made it inside. The tornado ripped through Deer Park. Roni was safe. A week later, the video went viral. Millions of people watched an officer fight a storm for a dog. Nitchman didn't see it as heroic. "He's my hip attachment," he said, "almost every day of the week." A tornado was coming. He didn't leave his partner behind.
