Apparently the solution to a dangerous party culture was, in part, to move the party. After the original 2024 allegations surfaced, some Cornell fraternities reportedly created or revised sober-monitor policies, and all 22 fraternity presidents voted to suspend Greek-sponsored events for a weekend. On paper, that sounds responsible. Very decisive. Very serious. Very “we are taking immediate action.” Then former students told The Washington Post that some fraternities simply moved parties off campus. And there it is. Because if the problem is dangerous conduct, shifting the address does not solve the problem. It solves the visibility problem. No fraternity house? No officially sponsored event? No convenient institutional paper trail? Wonderful. Everyone congratulate the spreadsheet. This is exactly why temporary bans and policy rewrites deserve scrutiny instead of applause. If a fraternity responds to a safety crackdown by relocating the same social activity somewhere harder to supervise, then the underlying culture has not changed. The risk has just been exported. And student organizers say their broader demands were never fully addressed. So while Cornell and Greek leadership could point to sober monitors, temporary shutdowns, and revised policies, students were still asking for deeper changes. Better prevention. Better oversight. Better accountability. A system that did more than react after something went wrong. Because “we stopped parties for one weekend” is not a structural reform. And “we created a sober-monitor policy” only works if somebody verifies the monitors are actually sober. We already know why that question is not theoretical. So Cornell should answer something very simple: When fraternity events moved off campus, did anyone track whether the same risks simply moved with them? Were those gatherings still connected to fraternity networks? Were there still safety expectations? Was anyone monitoring compliance? Or did everyone get to call the problem “handled” because the party crossed an invisible jurisdictional line? You cannot regulate your way out of a culture problem by moving the culture two blocks away. If the behavior survives the policy, the policy did not fix the behavior. It just changed the venue. #cornell7 #cornell #survivoradvocacy #institutionalaccountability
