I came across a statement that I think some of you are going to understand immediately: “Once the rain is over, an umbrella becomes a burden.” Think about that. When it’s pouring rain, you’re grateful for that umbrella. You hold onto it. You keep it close. Then the storm passes, the sun comes out, and suddenly that same umbrella becomes something you have to carry around. Unfortunately, some people treat relationships the same way. They come into your life during the storm. Maybe they’re going through a breakup. Maybe their life is falling apart. Maybe they’re lonely, struggling, or simply need somebody they know will be in their corner. You show up. You answer the phone. You encourage them. You believe in them when they don’t believe in themselves. Maybe you even throw them a lifeline when they’re barely keeping their head above water. Then their life gets better. They regain their confidence. They meet somebody new. They find something they think is better. Suddenly, the person who once said, “I don’t know what I’d do without you,” starts acting like you never mattered. That hurts. It can leave you asking, “Was I really that easy to walk away from?” Listen to me: Their inability to value you does not determine your value. Sometimes what we thought was loyalty was actually dependency. They weren’t necessarily attached to us as much as they were attached to what we provided: stability, encouragement, attention, reassurance, or simply a safe place to land. That’s painful to recognize, but it can also set you free, because you can stop asking, “What was wrong with me?” Maybe nothing was wrong with you. Maybe you simply learned something about that relationship you couldn’t see while you were standing in the middle of it. Don’t let that make you bitter. Don’t stop being generous. Don’t stop being loyal. Don’t stop being somebody who shows up when the people you love are standing in the rain. Just become wiser about who deserves that version of you. Pay attention to who checks on you when they don’t need anything. Pay attention to who values you when there’s nothing you can do for them. Those are your people. Most importantly, don’t let somebody walking away take your self-confidence down with them. If somebody put you down the moment their storm was over, you don’t need to spend your life convincing them that the umbrella was valuable. You were never an umbrella in the first place. #healing #relationships #toxic #anchored #breakuprecovery
