Just why
🌧️ WHY IS SAIGON FLOODING SO BADLY, AND WHY IS THE WATER TAKING SO LONG TO DRAIN? If you’ve noticed certain streets in Ho Chi Minh City flooding deeper than usual, with water taking longer to recede, there’s a reason. And it’s not just the rain. On October 8, HCMC’s Department of Construction explained why some flood-prone areas are experiencing worse flooding than in previous years. ✅ 1. TOO MUCH RAIN, TOO FAST The city’s drainage system was designed to handle around 85.3mm of rain over three hours, with tides at +1.32m. But on September 30 and October 1, some areas recorded over 100mm in just 45–60 minutes. That’s more rain in much less time than the system was designed to handle. ✅ 2. HIGH TIDES MAKE IT WORSE Heavy rain coincided with high tides from September 28 to October 1. Water levels in rivers and canals were already high, making it harder for floodwater to drain away, even after the rain stopped. ✅ 3. CONSTRUCTION DELAYS Several infrastructure projects have disrupted drainage. One example is the Nguyen Van Khoi and Le Van Tho drainage project, which has been suspended since May at around 33% completion because existing water pipes need relocating. ✅ 4. SAIGON IS GROWING FASTER THAN ITS DRAINAGE Some older drainage pipes are too small, while certain streets and alleys lack proper systems. More concrete, land subsidence, blocked drains and poorly connected pipes are making flooding worse. 📍 WHICH AREAS ARE AFFECTED? Streets including Phan Huy Ich, Quoc Huong, Nguyen Van Khoi and Ma Lo have experienced serious flooding during recent downpours. ✅ WHAT’S BEING DONE? Authorities plan to clear blocked drains, dredge waterways, use emergency pumps and address drainage problems around construction sites. Longer-term plans include upgrading drainage networks and continuing major flood-control projects. ✅The bottom line: Saigon’s flooding isn’t just about heavy rain. High tides, aging drainage systems, rapid development and construction delays are all contributing to deeper flooding and slower drainage.
