No it doesn‘t come from the verb „fressen“ it comes from the noun „Fresse“ which is just a more barbaric version of the german word for „face“.

Whoever told you that HDGDL has no romantic connotation has done you dirty. 😅 You'd NEVER send this to "just a Friend". This is used to show someone you have feelings for them. If they reply the same, you're most likely off to become "Friends with benefits". HDL is something you'd send a friend "maybe". As this is like a "I like you, as if you were as close to me as sibling" HDGDL is way beyond that level. 😬
