@gooddayatlantic: Since the six-episode thriller premiered on October 8, viewers have taken to Reddit to debate whether stars Josh Hartnett and Charlie Heaton actually nailed the Newfoundland accent. 🎬🍿 Some say the accents sound a little too Irish, while others are praising Heaton for sounding like someone straight out of Goulds or Kilbride! 😂 Meanwhile, international viewers are discovering Newfoundland accents for the first time, and some are shocked to learn that people in Canada actually sound like that! One thing’s for sure, Newfoundlanders have LOTS of opinions. 👀 👉 SWIPE to see what Reddit has to say about the accents! 📺 All six episodes of Below are now streaming on Netflix Canada. 💬 What do YOU think? Did Hollywood nail the Newfoundland accents or completely miss the mark? #gooddayatlantic #newfoundland #newfoundlandandlabrador #netflix #below
When Natasha Hensbridge (didn’t recognizes her at the time) stands up, my first thought was she looks out of place and is going to have a terrible accent. Then she spoke and it genuinely shocked me how well it was. I looked up who it was and felt like an idiot. For those who don’t know, she was born in Newfoundland. The “my duckie,” line put a smile on my face.

If they based a show in nfld and they didn’t haven’t any accents , they’d have a problem with that.

It seems to have an Irish/Scottish sound. Is this factual?

Let's put aside the accent issue. The real issues are the Ocean Science Center in Seal Cove 😳, randomly a flamingo on someone's house, the old hag that seemed more like missus from the grudge. That is only a few things.

I liked it... seems like the people that have the biggest issue with it are American or from Toronto

I thought it was interesting. I was curious about the Irish accents and did some research. I learned about the Irish settling there.

I was born and raised in Newfoundland and have been living in Ontario for 30 years, I think the series was excellent, very well done, accents were great, not an easy accent to learn because every community has a bit different accent and words they use

Yes, come on bys, give them a break, they did an awesome job, the movie was great and I hope there will be more, but with comments like this isn’t very inviting and kind. I thought Newfoundland was supposed to be kind. Be Kind

literally the only people I have heard bitching about the accents are people not from the island, all the islanders here i know appreciate that they at least tried to get the accents right. which is more than what most production company's do

It’s wild that people are making so much out of the accents, they aren’t that easy to master, that being said, when have you seen Newfoundland customs and community portrayed so accurately on an American television show?

I’m from the east coast and have family in NFLD and i tell ya if they had used their actual thick accent if your not from the east coast they would never understand it so i think people need to relax. I get why they didn’t go full newfie

The accents were off, but the story is cool. Some of the pacing is slow, but I’m going to hang in there. Just glad to see a show about Newfoundland that wasn’t about just fishing and cod. The characters actually had story arcs

I actually didn’t find the accents too bad . I found it way better than the actors in the play come from away

They did great! Imagine if the actors actually spoke at the speed most Newfoundlanders do, sure you’d need subtitles to understand [Big LOL][Big LOL]

I thought the small details were a home run. like how they didn't have rum and coke but rum and Pepsi or the beer being blue star.

You have to remember, there’s different accents all from town to town. I have family from Bonavista Bay, to St. John’s, and some of our accent’s are really strong.

Ya,this is about nature, sea life and our not forgetting how connected we all are on this planet. The picking apart of a series that show cased how beautiful Newfoundland is and it's people is shallow and petty, you all missed the point, you went judgy and spent more time picking apart the series instead of enjoying the scenery, the folks that had history there, the msg of holding ground for a place you believe in,the place you call home. I guess some people can't multitask, this series involved the sea creature yes but it also delved into power, wealth and greed over people and lies mixed with corruption, gee where have we heard that before.
