I’ve been hiding from myself for as long as I can remember. I’ve been angry with myself for not being normal & trying (& failing) to fit in since primary school. Even becoming chronically ill & disabled didn’t change that. For years I fought to “stay normal”, wasting energy I didn’t have on putting on makeup & “normal” clothes, a physical mask behind which I tried to hide my new reality. . It took developing a community of amazing friends online (& a lot of therapy) for me to really start allowing myself to be me. I’ve started dressing in the clothes I’ve always loved, I’ve come out as trans non-binary, I’ve changed my name & my pronouns &, more importantly, I’ve stopped hiding from myself. . I’m turning 30 next weekend & I’ve been really scared about it. It feels like crossing the final barrier between the “normal” life a 16 year old me planned for themselves & the reality which started when I got sick not a year later. But when I look back at my 20s I no longer mourn what might have been. I got to meet you, my community, my friends, all the incredible people online who have gotten me through the last decade of my life.
