At 62, Erin Murphy has reached the age Elizabeth Montgomery never lived beyond. The little girl who played Tabitha Stephens on "Bewitched" (1964) is now as old as the woman millions remember as her mother. But their connection was never confined to a television living room. Erin was born in Encino, California, on June 17, 1964, five minutes after her twin sister, Diane. Their mother took the girls to an audition in 1966, where producers watched them play with toys. The twins were hired to share the role of Samantha and Darrin's daughter. Erin was not yet two. Diane disliked the commotion of filming, while Erin adored the lights. Eventually, Erin became the familiar little face with the blonde hair and mischievous eyes. She knew television magic wasn't real. Crew members suspended objects on wires, and adults hurried around the set arranging each marvelous surprise. Childhood, however, was very real there. Erin called Elizabeth "Mantha Mommy" because she couldn't pronounce Samantha. Dick Sargent became "Darrin Daddy." Elizabeth wasn't simply kind when the cameras rolled. Their families visited each other, and Erin remembered movie outings when Elizabeth and her own mother sat in the balcony tossing popcorn down to the children. Imagine being small enough to believe that was ordinary. One scene accidentally captured their closeness. Elizabeth placed little Erin where she was supposed to stand, but the girl suddenly ran toward the kitchen. Elizabeth chased after her. The moment wasn't scripted, yet the filmmakers kept it. For a few seconds, the television mother was simply doing what mothers do. Another memory belonged to Elizabeth's real daughter, Rebecca, born on Erin's fifth birthday in 1969. Erin was thrilled that they shared June 17. She visited the newborn and brought a peculiar gift, a clear plastic crib decoration containing a live goldfish. Years later, she could still remember Elizabeth loving the strange little present. There was another grandmother waiting at work. Agnes Moorehead, who played Endora, read stories to Erin and called her a granddaughter. Erin admired Agnes's colorful earrings and Elizabeth's heart necklace. She wasn't collecting famous people's autographs. She was collecting the small, glowing possessions and gestures children associate with family. When "Bewitched" ended in 1972, Erin was eight. She chose Girl Scout camp over a part in "The Waltons" and later cheerleading over another television opportunity. She grew into a life that belonged to her rather than to Tabitha, although strangers still wanted her to touch her nose and perform magic. Elizabeth remained part of it. Erin became close to her children, especially Rebecca. As Erin grew older, she recognized another side of the actress. Elizabeth was funny, outspoken and serious about her work, not the endlessly gentle homemaker fans imagined. Erin later said, "She really was like a mom to me. I definitely think of her more like a family member than a co-worker." Then, on May 18, 1995, Elizabeth died of cancer at 62. Erin was only 30. The woman who had chased her across a sitcom kitchen, shared popcorn outings and watched her grow up was gone. No rerun could bring back the person who existed when the cameras stopped. Erin became a mother herself, raising six sons. After her son Parker was diagnosed with autism, she devoted more energy to advocacy. Her life also included television hosting, business ventures and returning to performing. She refused to let one childhood role decide every chapter of her adulthood. In June 2026, Erin marked her 62nd birthday by sharing an old picture with Elizabeth beside a newer image of herself. She wrote, "Little Tabitha from Bewitched (Me!) is 62 years old today." Somewhere inside that simple birthday comparison rested thirty-one years of absence, and all the warmth of a childhood spent with a woman she still remembered. The child grew older. The love she remembers did not.
