There is a book called the automotive labor guide which tells mechanics let's just say changing an alternator for this particular car would be a 90-minute job they can only charge for an hour and a half worth of Labor even if it takes them 3 hours to do it. Most people don't even know this book exists. I don't even remember what car I had at the time or with the repair was I think it was a water pump and it was a Japanese car it was driving very tight in there and difficult to get to he tried to charge me for 3 hours and it was only supposed to be an hour job it was not my fault it took him 3 hours he could have looked at the car and said hey I'm not comfortable doing this job it's out of my wheelhouse you'll need to take it somewhere else I would rather he did that. I told him what I knew and that's all he could charge and he crumbled but adjusted the price and I paid it and went on my way a couple weeks later my car started sounding really weird I took it to a different mechanic in a different city that I was in at the time and he came out and said what did you have done to this car last night I told him and he said well I don't know how that mechanic did it but you have three different belts that are supposed to be on your car he couldn't get them back on evidently because he took a single serpentine belt and twisted around everything he said I don't know how he did it but he should go out of business for doing that to you he said I'm replacing all the belts at no charge to you just so that you now have faith and mechanics again. I don't know if I know anyone that would do something that generous today.
