In October 1966, Lagos witnessed an exodus of many Igbo residents heading east. Months of political crisis, ethnic violence and the September massacres in Northern Nigeria had created widespread fear among Easterners across the country. Although Lagos itself was largely spared the scale of violence seen in the North, tension was rising, and some Igbo residents began selling their belongings and leaving the city. On October 12, reports described crowded bus depots as Igbo workers, traders and professionals made their way east. Some shopkeepers reportedly sold their goods at heavily reduced prices simply to leave. The crisis was reshaping where Nigerians felt safe enough to live, Lagos’ traditional ruler, Oba Adeyinka Oyekan II, responded by embarking on a six-day tour of the city, holding public rallies and appealing for calm and peaceful relations between different communities. The tragedy is that these movements of people were only the beginning. Less than eight months later, on 30 May 1967, Lt. Col. Odumegwu Ojukwu declared the independent Republic of Biafra, and Nigeria descended into a devastating civil war. Lagos was not the main battlefield but the war had already begun changing the city.
