Berenjak | DTLA. Berenjak, the first U.S. location of London’s celebrated Persian restaurant, has finally opened in DTLA! I’d heard the original London flagship was notoriously difficult to book, and now I understand why. The food is phenomenal, the presentation exquisite, and the ambiance warm and romantic. My expectations for Persian cuisine have skyrocketed! A few personal highlights (from a non-Persian perspective): 1. Black Truffle Olivieh A rich, truffle-topped chicken salad hummus with potato, egg, and pickled cucumber. Absolutely divine, especially with their Taftoon! 2. Taftoon Freshly baked, pillowy wood-fired sourdough with sesame seeds. Beautifully puffed up like a hot air balloon and perfect for dipping. 3. Ghormeh Sabzi A slow-cooked lamb and kidney bean stew packed with fragrant herbs, served with Persian rice and tangy pickled vegetables. Tender, deeply flavorful, and without any gaminess. A must-order! 4. Tikkeh Masti Kabab Perfectly grilled, tender beef fillet served with roasted tomatoes, pickled onions, garlic, and okra over flatbread. Cooked to a beautiful medium-rare. Another must-order! 5. Grape Sour A refreshing, beautifully balanced cocktail with pisco, aragh, blueberry, citrus, egg white, and port. Loved it so much I ordered a second! 6. Black Lime Sharbat A refreshing, citrusy mocktail with black lime, fresh lime, soda, and mint. Light and not overly sweet. Every dish and drink was a standout. Now I understand all the hype, and I’m officially obsessed. If you can get a reservation, don’t let it pass you by.
